Competing in a national pageant system can be accomplished in two ways: Competing in a state pageant and winning the state title or representing a state via an at large title. A state pageant is a pageant that precedes the national pageant. Contestants around the state pay the fees to enter the pageant, and a competition takes place. The contestant who wins the state pageant has the opportunity to compete at the national pageant.
Competing at large happens when there is no state pageant for a contestant to enter so she pays for a title to represent the state of her choosing. Either way of entering into a national pageant is perfectly fine, but I prefer competing in a state pageant. It is cheaper, and you get the opportunity to network and develop relationships with contestants in your state.
I understand competing in a state pageant is not always possible, but it is important to know the difference between the two and make a decision that is best for you.
State PageantĀ
- You get the opportunity to compete with other contestants around the state to win the title.
- If you win a the state pageant title, you receive a prize package which normally includes payment of national pageant fees.
At Large Title
- There is no state competition.
- A number of at large contestants may have to go through an interview process in order to be selected or they may just purchase the title out right if it is available
- You have to cover all fees because there is no prize package. This includes your state crown, state banner, national fees, etc. Coverage of fees will have to come from out of pocket or through sponsorships.
As you can see there are differences in both the state pageant and an at large title. Either option will enable you to accomplish a goal of competing on the national level.
