The Royal Spotlight is a brand new interview series where I highlight queens from a variety of pageant systems. Our first royal spotlight is a queen with the Royal International Miss pageant system. She is Natalie Miller, Royal International Ms. 2015.
Tell us about yourself.
At 25 years I’m figuring out this adventure of life. As I get older I’m realizing I need to do more of what makes me happy. I do have a busy life schedule so when I do have spare or free moments I make those count. I’m a huge fan of yoga to help counter balance the stress levels that come from having an active life! I am from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma currently living in Dallas, Texas. A middle child sandwiched in between brothers has made my life eventful and spontaneous. Family is super important to me as well as my close knit group of friends whom I also consider family. Before pageantry I was a competitive All-Star cheerleading coach with occasional tumbling to insure I keep my skills, not to mention its a great workout! I do consider myself a health conscious individual, but I do love my cookie dough ice cream.
When did you start competing in pageants?
I started competing in pageants when a friend’s Dad suggested that I do Miss Oklahoma Collegiate, and it took off from there.
Why do you compete in pageants?
Pageants give me this amazing boost of self-esteem and confidence that can’t be compared. There’s something about being all dressed, make-upped to take the stage and strut your stuff to being able to talk about the areas of interest that create your passion to give back or become involved in the community. Also the friendships that are formed are unrivaled. It’s truly amazing how quick you resemble a family unit.
How many titles have you won?
Believe it or not I’ve won 2 titles; the regional title for Royal International Miss and the Royal International Ms. title. I have only competed in 3 pageants as a whole.
Tell us about the Royal International Miss Pageant System.
The Royal International Miss Pageant System focuses on community service and forming a sisterhood. I know it sounds cliche, but it’s absolutely true! The director, Mrs. Sharon, is amazing and you can feel the love she has for us. The pageant has two different major titles you can win, National Role Model or Royal International. The Role Model division is judged on community service hours, interview and evening gown. This group of National Queens set which community service projects will be established for the year, and four contestants receive the honor of this title. The Royal International Queens are the system’s National Queens, and every age division has a Queen representative. Competitions are held in interview, evening gown, fun fashion (outfit of choice/runway category). You are able to compete for both titles but only able to be crowned as one. As a National Queens unit we’ve accomplished so much within the projects the Role Models have set and with our personal community service projects. Even though there are separate programs within the system, we all work as a unit.
I see that you competed in your natural hair for the Royal International Miss Pageant. What advice would you give to females that want to compete in their natural hair but are afraid to?
Don’t be afraid! It’s how you were created and your truest self. I loved competing with my natural hair, not to mention it cut down primping time! That’s a big win in my books!
What have you learned about yourself through your pageant experience?
I do my best when I’m enjoying the moment. If I’m over rehearsed I tend to over think all aspects of what I’m doing. Before I take the stage or walk into an interview room, a silly quiet noise and a body shimmy takes place to clear my head!
What are your future plans for your pageant career?
Currently I’m not 100% about my pageant future. There have been many plugs about venturing into the USA system but not sure if I’ll pursue that outlet or go in a different direction.
What words of advice do you live by?
You’re the only you on this planet, and no one else can do you like you can!
