The Royal Spotlight is an interview series where I highlight queens from a variety of pageant systems. This month I had the pleasure of interviewing America’s Elite Miss 2017 Kaylan Colvin.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a Bio-Medical Science major at Troy University. I love staying involved through Freshman Forum, SGA, and Alpha Gamma Delta. During my spare time, I enjoy adventuring, crafting, and modeling. I have a miniature dachshund named Lokai that lights up my world!
When did you start competing in pageants?
I started competing in pageants before I could walk. My mom carried me across the stage in my first couple of pageants. I took a break until I was in the 7th grade where I picked back up with local and school pageants. I have been competing yearly ever since!
Why do you compete in pageants?
I compete in pageants for opportunities! These opportunities include but are not limited to community service, role model figure, and modeling. Pageantry is a great way to serve as a role model for younger girls and promote being humbly confident.
How many titles have you won?
I have won many local titles. My most unique title would have to be Teen Miss Toadlick, which is a country music festival hosted in Dothan, Alabama. America’s Elite Miss is my first national title, and I could not be more excited about this year!
Tell us about the America’s Elite Miss Pageant System.
America’s Elite Miss is truly a pageant system that strives to make a difference. If you are looking for system that cares about giving back to others and sculpting young girls into compassionate and confident women, this system is for you! Through raising awareness for childhood cancer, I have found a career path to pediatric oncology.
How do you prepare for competition?
There are many different areas of competition to prepare for. I strive to eat healthy and workout 3 times a week. This keeps me motivated and productive. I feel the most important preparation is mental preparation. Staying positive and confident in yourself can make the biggest difference in your performance.
What have you learned about yourself through your pageant experience?
I am a perfectionist. I am constantly making sure everything is exactly how it should be or at least how I think it should be. Through pageantry, I have learned that not everything will always follow the path I have envisioned it to be, and that is perfectly okay.
What are your future plans for your pageant career?
I plan to continue to do pageants. I will mostly compete in pageants with scholarship opportunities due to being a college student.
What words of advice do you live by?
“Success always comes when preparedness meets opportunity.”
