I know there is this adage that says, “Rules Are Made to be Broken.” Well, that is a fallacy in the pageant world. Not following the rules and regulations that are set forth by a pageant system could easily cost you the crown. Each pageant has its own distinct set of rules regarding judging and scoring in categories of competition. It is important that contestants follow these rules that are set forth by the pageant. Failure to do so could result in a low score.
I have judged numerous pageants, and I have witnessed contestants take liberties and not completely follow the rules. For example, if you are instructed to wear red for your personal introduction competition, do not use this opportunity to wear yellow because you feel it goes better with your skin tone. As a judge, I will have no choice but to deduct points from your score regardless of the eloquence and passion in your delivery of your personal introduction. To make sure you adhere to competition rules, take heed to the following:
- Read and study the pageant handbook. Pageant directors do not spend hours creating these documents for their health.
- Ask the pageant director for clarity on things you do not understand. It is better to be safe than sorry.
I charge pageant contestants to become well versed on the rules and regulations of their pageant system. It would be a shame to compete without sufficient knowledge. Contrary to popular belief, what you don’t know could indeed hurt you.
