Pageant Girls Run is a series that details the health and fitness journeys of women and girls in pageantry.
On August 6, 2016, I traveled to Anniston, Alabama to participate in the RRCA Southern Regional Championship Woodstock 5K 2016. The Woodstock 5K which began 36 years ago, is the oldest footrace in the Southeast. I chose this race because I wanted to participate in race close to my alma mater Jacksonville State University (Go Gamecocks!), and I wanted the opportunity to participate in another RRCA Championship Race. (I participated in the 2015 RRCA 8K State Championship in Montgomery, Alabama. Click here to read the recap.) I was able to join forces with my lovely sole sisters of Black Girls Run! (Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville were represented) to partake in this race in a team effort. Our passion for running and competition helped us garner two team awards: Largest Female Team and the Fastest Team. As far as speed is concerned, my sole sisters and I from BGR! Montgomery did not do so bad ourselves.
In spite of the heat, the race was fun with a bit of a challenge. It was well organized, and I loved the cheering section towards the end of the race. The cool towel and water bottle at the finish line was just what I needed. I had fun taking pictures and spending time with my fellow runners. I even had the opportunity to meet Ashley who is one of my AKA Lambda Pi sisters from Spring 1995.
To top it off, I was able to purchase a commemorative medal for this race. Yes, this girl loves her bling!
After this race, I promised myself I would take a race break until 2017. These races can break a pageant girl’s budget if you let them. (I am frugal, and I have mad respect for the budget.) Well, I am already getting the urge to compete again this year so we shall see what happens. Let’s pray that I don’t fall into temptation. 🙂
