Individuals have their own reasons for competing in pageants. Pageantry teaches skills that are utilized in personal and professional lives. Competing in pageants allowed me to develop self-confidence and strengthen my communication skills. Due to my pageant experience, I have been able to accomplish many things such as starting a pageantry blog, writing my first book, acquiring speaking engagements, and serving on the staff of a national pageant.
A few months ago, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking at the Miss Globe Send Off Party at Maggie Street Missionary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. During this event, I spoke on my top ten reasons for competing in pageants. I thought it would be appropriate to share those same reasons with my audience.
- Try something new.Trying something new is always fun. It adds to your quality of life.
- Develop self-confidence.Self-confidence is believe in one’s own abilities. A lack of self-confidence will only hinder you from succeeding in life.
- Develop or improve communication skills.Having the ability to speak and write effectively is a vital skill that opens doors of opportunity.
- Encouragement from others to compete.A parent or friend may see something in you and encourage you to compete. My mother is the reason why I began competing in pageants.
- Enter into the modeling industry.A number of women and girls have a desire to model, and pageantry is great way to prepare yourself for the modeling industry.
- Obtain scholarships. There are several pageants that have scholarship opportunities for contestants. For example, The Miss America Organization is the largest scholarship provider for young women.
- Showcase your talents and skills. You may sing, dance, or play a musical instrument. There are pageants available where you can showcase these talents.
- Promote a platform.A platform is an opportunity for public discussion. It can be a cause or organization that is near and dear to your heart. My platform is entitled CODE YELLOW: An Alert on Endometriosis. I chose an endometriosis awareness platform because I have a personal connection to the disease because I was diagnosed with it in 2008.
- Serve the community. Many pageants have some form of community service component. Contestants have the ability to join forces with the pageant and serve a cause.
- Build or increase your brand.Personal branding is essentially the ongoing process of establishing a prescribed image or impression in the mind of others about an individual, group, or organization. It is also how you market yourself. For example, I have branded myself as a pageant professional, and I have a following because of my knowledge and skills in the industry. Interestingly enough, Pageant Director Rose McCall has even dubbed me as the “The Brand Ambassador of Pageantry.” 🙂
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of reasons. This list is based on my experience in the industry. In the end, please make sure competing in pageants is something you desire to do. If it is indeed a desire, you will get the most of out your experience.
