“Fashion is architecture. It is a matter of proportions.” – Coco Chanel
When it is time to shop for an evening gown, do you feel overwhelmed or uneasy? So many of us struggle with finding the “right dress” because we fail to understand the power of shopping with our body type in mind. The struggle can now come to an end. Let’s discuss!

#1 Knowledge is Power

How many times have you heard that knowledge is power? Guess what? This isn’t exactly true. Knowledge is power IF you act on that knowledge. If you know your body type and you don’t shop with this knowledge in mind, how is this helpful? In fact, you are doing a real injustice to yourself. If you don’t know your body type, check out this fantastic YouTube video to learn more about your body and how to shop the right way for you.
#2 Style & Comfortability Go Best Together

Do you ever feel like you can’t be comfortable in a dress because of the look you want to achieve? This doesn’t have to be the case. To ensure how to feel comfortable in your evening wear, you need to keep the following mind:
- Buy the right size (it is only a number)
- Consider tailoring the clothes for a better fit
- Make sure you can easily move in the dress
- Pick a color that you feel comfortable in
- Buy a dress that works within your budget
#3 Dress for the Occasion

One of the considerations that you need to think about for your evening gown purchase is the occasion of the event you are attending. Are you shopping for a wedding, celebrity event, pageant, or something else? When you show up dressed for the occasion you are saying to the world, “I am here, and Ready to Slay.”
#4 Create Your Signature Style
Do you have a signature style? If so, then picking your evening gown should match the type of presentation you have designed for yourself. If you haven’t created your signature style yet, don’t fret. You can start the journey by doing the following:
- Go through your closet to assess what you have
- Observe trends and your personal shopping preferences
- Get rid of clothes you no longer wear or enjoy wearing
- Identify items you want to wear that you don’t already own
- Gain styling knowledge from blogs, vlogs, podcasts, and magazines
- Push yourself to expand your comfort zone
- Be fearless with the steps you take to create your signature style
#5 Resourcefulness is Key

Fashion takes time, effort, and energy like anything else good and worthy in your life. Sometimes you can walk into one store and try on a dress and it works perfectly. Sometimes, you need to go to several stores to find what you are looking for. Maybe you find the dress and it still needs to be tailored for a better fit. Sometimes you must shop online instead of in-person. Other times, you need to shop with resale and consignment stores to find the unique dress you want that fits your budget. Stores like StyleForIt can be a blessing for plus size women looking for affordable stylish pieces size 12-32. You have to be willing to take the time to really find what you are looking for.
#6 Keep an Open Mind

At the end of the day, if you don’t keep an open mind for your evening gown, you might miss out on finding a dress that will make you feel spectacular for your special event. Here are some tips to keep in mind for your next shopping trip:
- If you take a negative attitude towards your shopping experience, the harder the experience will be
- Finding the right dress might not be easy, but it is never impossible
- Be open to the tips of influencers and fashionistas sharing their advice
- Your fashion is a representation of who you are in this world, pay special attention to what you are saying about yourself
