Sashes, Crowns, Trophies, Hair, Makeup, Smiles, Friendships, and Gratefulness sound like words associated with your typical pageant. However, this is not your typical pageant. These words describe the Alabama Angels Pageant. The Alabama Angels Pageant is a noncompetitive pageant designed for children and adults with special needs, and it is open to all ages. No one is too young or too old to experience the magic of the Alabama Angels Pageant. The 2015 pageant was held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at Frazer United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and it had over 100 participants. This state pageant was birth out of the Angels Pageant System which was started in Arkansas by BJ Thorn. BJ Thorn created the pageant for her daughter Andrea who had special needs. Each participant in the pageant is rewarded with a crown, sash, trophy, t-shirt, and a goody bag of items. For the past three years I have had the pleasure and honor of working with this amazing system, and for the past two years I have served as the stage coordinator. I started volunteering with this organization first because of my love for pageants, but I also wanted to be a servant. I must say it has been a joy to see the faces of our Angels walk across stage and smile before family and friends. On this day they are not judged on their abilities or talent, but they are embraced with the love of God that he has for all of his children. They are no different from anyone else, and that is how they should be treated. My angels have taught me that no matter how rough life can be, you can still have a smile on your face and know that life is still worth living.
