The Royal Spotlight is an interview series where I highlight queens from a variety of pageant systems. This month I had the pleasure of interviewing Miss Globe Mississippi United States 2017 Ahdis Beruk.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Ahdis Beruk and I am Miss Globe Mississippi 2017. I am an upcoming junior at Greenville High School in Greenville, MS. I’ve been involved in pageantry since the age of 7. In my spare time, other than competing in pageants, I participate in volleyball, track, dance, theatre, and modeling. My time is also dedicated to writing poetry and stories/scenes that will be made into films one day and produced by myself. My goal is to graduate high school as valedictorian and then go to college and get a BFA and minor in film or dance. After that, I hope to get a Master’s degree in script writing. While participating in activities to enhance myself and craft, I also give some of that time to others. I believe you are never too young to learn “to love others as you love yourself.” I believe the values and character building that volunteerism provides will make youth less selfish and entitled but brings on maturity. I promote this belief through my non-profit organization “YEAH!” (Youth Encouraging and Actively Helping), which focuses on encouraging youth, ages 8-18, to volunteer and accept the “Give 2 Challenge,” which is the challenge of giving 2 hours of volunteer service to any organization or person of their choosing in their community. Once they accept the challenge and sign up on my website, www.YEAHVOLUNTEER.com or www.GenerationOn.org, they will be able to print out a certificate to identify themselves as a YEAH! Volunteer.
When did you start competing in pageants?
I began competing in pageants at the age of 7. My very first pageant was National American Miss. Originally, my older sister was supposed to participate, but the director asked if I wanted to participate as well. I said yes and my mother agreed to it too. My mom drilled me on all phases of competition and I was able to take home third runner up and first place in three other optional competitions. I love the stage, and I’ve been hooked ever since!
Why do you compete in pageants?
Now that I’ve gotten older, my purpose for doing pageantry has evolved and still continues to. When I first started, I competed for confidence and self-esteem purposes. I’ve always been “the tall girl” (currently 5’10’’) and putting myself in positions to be confident in how I look because there was no altering or changing it forced me to love my height that students used to bully me about at school. I discovered self- love and healthy pride, so now, every day I feel beautiful and unstoppable. Now, I do pageants for academic and career purposes. Pageants such as the Miss America system provide college scholarships and that’s very helpful for youth going to college and those currently in college. Since I’m involved in the arts and modeling, pageants provide an excellent amount of networking that can be done with agents and managers that are involved in show biz which helps to acquire more opportunities. Ultimately, I always do pageants for the same reason. I compete for the experience and because they’re FUN!!!
How many titles have you won?
The title of Miss Globe Mississippi 2017 makes my 13th title.
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Globe United States Pageant system?
I decided to compete in the Miss Globe United States Pageant system because it is highly modeling influenced, and I want to model professionally. Competing will allow me the chance to make connections with different agencies and management companies that are there. If I win, not only will l be given the chance to model and be featured in a film, but I’ll be able to travel across the country advocating my platform “YEAH!”.
How are you preparing for competition?
My everyday life schedule is very hectic and pretty much a pageant preparation. However, there are things I focus on particularly when preparing for a pageant.
- Read up on and watch current events, news, etc.
- Drill myself on interview questions and my walk
- Work “YEAH!”
- Make appearances and speak
- Volunteer
- Do a theatre production, dance competition, etc. to work on stage performance and presence
- Read
- Exercise and detox for skin and health internally and externally
- Meditate for focus
- BEAUTY REST!!!
What are your future plans for your pageant career?
If given the opportunity, I plan to do a lot of modeling, platform work, and acting with the Miss Globe United States title or even the Miss Globe title. In the future, I plan to win Miss USA and Miss Black USA. Then, maybe… just maybe… I’ll retire. I might be that 50 year old in the Misses division!
What makes you unique?
What makes me unique is my mile long legs. I’m very easy to spot since usually I’m one of the tallest young women in the room. I can do a really good British accent as well which is pretty neat too!
What words of advice do you live by?
I live by the quote “The key to getting ahead is getting started.” by the Mississippian writer Mark Twain. Since I’m involved in a lot of things and having to maintain my 4.0 GPA in school, there’s always something that needs to be done or worked on. This causes me to either lose or win my battle when it comes to time management. Some days I lose and I have to stay up late to get things done. Some days I win and I’m left with some time to binge on Ben and Jerry’s chocolate ice cream, but no matter what I always start. I’ve learned that when you put yourself in activities, programs, etc. that you want to be involved in, especially professionally, you MUST first START by scheduling that photography course, attending that dance intensive, or trying to get accepted into that Math and Science school. All of the other grey areas that you’re unsure about in your path to where you’re headed to will begin to color themselves.
