Fasting is not a new concept in today’s society. The original definition of fasting is abstaining from food or drink for religious purposes. Some may fast for weight loss or body cleansing; however, fasting is not limited to food and drink. You can fast from people, places, and things. The goal with fasting is to clear your mind and energy so you can hear discern the voice of God for your life. Fasting is essential in competing in pageants. Really, you say? Absolutely! When you are preparing to compete, it is important that your mind is clear and that you are focused so you can give your best in the interview room and on the stage. Fasting helps you minimize distractions in your journey to the crown. Here are 6 easy steps to properly fast for the crown.
- Consult a Doctor.
This is essential if you are fasting from food and drink. Everyone’s body is different so what may work for one person may not work for you. I personally cannot fast from food and drink for an extended period of time due to health reasons. If you decide to fast from food or drink, make sure you consult with a doctor prior to the fast. You want to make sure your body can handle a fast of this nature.
- Minimize Secular Influences.
Secular influence includes news, TV shows, movies, music, social media, and certain types of conversations. When you are fasting for the crown, you don’t have time to let any and everything be deposited into your mind and spirit. The verbal, visual, auditory, and mental garbage can affect your ability to prepare for your competition and be your best self.
- Increase Your Word Time.
The Bible is filled with numerous scriptures that can assist in your spiritual walk. Find a passage, and read and meditate on it day and night. I especially love Psalm 23. This scripture provides comfort and lets me know that God is the ultimate source, and he supplies all of my needs and wants.
- Incorporate Prayer into Your Life.
Have a conversation with God. Convey to him your desires, hopes, dreams, and/or fears. If you consistently pray each day, God will begin to speak to you. Remember, prayer is not a bargaining tool used to get what you want from God. Prayer opens the door for a relationship with God. While you are praying for yourself, please remember to pray for the contestants, judges, emcee, director, and staff. They all are in need of your prayers because at the end of the day you want a pleasant and peaceful pageant experience.

- Increase in Praise and Thanksgiving.
In all things, give God praise. Praise Him when things are good, bad, or indifferent. It may seem hard to praise God during those tough times, but will being sad, stressed, or depressed help your situation? Push through and give Him thanks because He deserves it.
In all honesty, He does not have to wake you up every morning or even give you the opportunity to compete in a pageant. Remember, praise and thanksgiving opens the door for your increase and rewards.
- Reduce Sinful Behavior.
I know this is not a popular statement, but if you want to successfully fast for the crown, you must let some behaviors go. I know it may not be easy, but it is definitely worth it. Is lying or drug use for example more important than manifesting a crown? The choice is yours. You must make a decision. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot have it both ways.
If you do these six steps, you will be well on your way to properly fasting for the crown. Are you still unsure if fasting will work for you? Don’t take my word for it. Ask Alicia R. Jones. She fasted for the crown, and she walked away with the title of Miss International Phi Beta Sigma 2017-2019. Here is what Alicia had to say about fasting.
“I pray about what’s ahead, and I pray about what steps to take for the fast. I also pray about how long it’s supposed to be and what I should fast from. I fast before and during competition, and then after competition, my fast is over. Some people may celebrate and fast again when it’s over. It depends on their spiritual level and what they are looking for.”

You don’t have to be a Christian to fast. Anyone can fast. The key here is to abstain from certain things for a period of time so you can gain clarity, understanding, and peace. You may not always win a physical crown, but you will gain an intangible crown. Either way, a crown has been manifested.
